Ahupua'a Explorations 2017

HWH Summer Program comes to a close!

Ahupua'a Explorations Youth Summer Program 2017 is coming to a close this Wednesday, July 26 after four weeks of fun! The Hanalei Watershed Hui, in partnership with the NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and Papahanaumokuakea National Monument and World Heritage Site and the State of Hawaii DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources offered the Ahupua’a Explorations program to students in 4th to 7th grade this summer from July 3 to July 26. A total of 16 students participated in the program this year. The program consisted of classroom and field work activities such as field trips to Limahuli Botanical Gardens, Okolehao Trail, Hanalei Wildlife Refuge, and the Hanalei River. The students were able to dissect an o'opu and learn about fish anatomy in addition to fine-tuning their technology skills in completing their O'opu Video Project. We hope our explorers enjoyed their time in the program and that they were able to take away important knowledge about their ahupua'a and their little friend, the o'opu! Mahalo to our partners for making this possible, and a special mahalo to our program instructors, Kalani Flores, Yumi Yasutake, and Katie Nalesere for all their hard work. Finally, mahalo to our DukeEngage student interns Briana and Elizabeth for assisting in organizing the program and helping the instructors throughout the program.
